Additional Specials:

Munchie Monday: Children will assist in preparing fun and healthy snacks. This enables children to feel empowered by serving others. They also learn proper manners in serving such as the importance of washing hands, using gloves, handing out napkins, and proper utensils. During this time, we review the five food groups and discuss their necessity to the body and health. Children are encouraged to include a fruit or vegetable with their snacks. History or science topics are used as a theme in making snacks.

Arty Tuesday: Children will create works of art that are linked to topics and themes taught in school. For example, using our workbench, children make sailboats using blocks of wood and dowels. They learn how to use tools such as sand paper, screwdrivers, and pliers. Also, collages are made using different types of mediums for texture and effect such as tiles, beads, stones, color paper, fabrics, and miscellaneous items. The children enjoy mixing primary colors to form other colors and shades.

Wacky Wednesday: On Wednesday, children explore science. They are taught the concept of displacement using activities from the Links to Learning curriculum. For example, a glass of water is filled to the brim and children at various tables are given pennies to put into the glass until it overflows. This reinforces counting for those in kindergarten, and for the older elementary grades, the concept of water being displaced by the coins. We also take a large jar, fill it with rocks, then sand, and finally water. This teaches the child that, though the container seemed to be full with the rocks, there was still room for both the sand and water. Also, children learn how to make a piñata by mixing flour, Elmer’s glue, and water, then dipping strips of newspaper over an air filled balloon.

Study Buddy Thursday: Children participate in a Jeopardy style game which helps them to prepare for Friday’s upcoming quizzes. Topics in Spelling and Math as well as others are used. We make copies of the spelling lists the schools provide and quiz them on these words.

TGIF Friday: Children participate in various games, drama, music, and sports activities such as baseball, kickball, volleyball, and badminton. We have air hockey, billiards, trampoline, Simon (memory game), Boggle (word game) and much more. Time for free play is made available.
